The Swiss architectural studio Herzog & de Meuron is responsible for the project to extend the Cambridge Biomedical Campus (United Kingdom), the largest medical research centre in Europe.
The creators of this new R&D+i complex aimed to promote the concept of “visible science”, a place where medical advances are developed without secrets, with greater transparency, on view to all. Therefore the designs give prominence to open spaces, natural lighting and striking windows.
In aspiring to clarity and luminosity, the architects decided to embrace various proposals of wooden curtain walling, where the glass is held, and embellished, by VIGAM oak timber, the only oak glulam beam in the world with the CE marking for structural use.
